Is unschooling possible on Bornholm/in Denmark?
Many people wonder if unschooling is legal in Denmark. Officially, all unschooling in Denmark is run under “homeschooling”. Homeschooling is a right stated in the Danish constitution, which gives a great basic security. There is education duty for all children as from 1st of August of the year when a child turns 6, but no school obligation. From there, it is our job as parents to create the bridge between your unschooling life at home and the “homeschooling world” for the check-ups with the municipality called “tilsyn”.
Fortunately, there are plenty of unschoolers in Denmark, great support such as Facebook groups, the website of the Danish association for homeschoolers “Fri Læring” including their forum and all the amazing support they offer, as well as the fantastic courses/webinars “Den gode tilsyn” run by Fri Læring’s former chairman, co-founder, and greatly experienced unschooling dad Morten Holmstrup, who today even is employed by some municipalities himself in order to conduct tilsyn.
Unschooling community on Bornholm
Today, there are about 25 families on Bornholm who unschool/homeschool, or who are planning to do so as soon once their children reach school age. It is an active, diverse and very welcoming group, and I am deeply grateful for every single member. We have regular, organized meet-ups one to three times a week, plus lovely events such as seasonal celebrations where we gather around a topic, all bring food to contribute to a large buffet, and then play, sing, eat, talk etc. Many of us have found closer friends within the group and visit each other privately, and smaller groups meet up due to common interests or since they live in the same area.
This year, several new families moved to Bornholm, and a large amount of families has been on the island to visit all year long. Most likely, our community will grow quite a lot during the coming years, since Bornholm provides truly a wonderful environment for unschooling families.
